Malmö Redhawks suffered a loss of SEK 20 million

Malmö had a difficult sports season in 2022-2023.

The economic season was even more difficult.

Group profit ends at SEK 19.9 million.

– We have received preliminary approval from SHL and will pass the elite license, says Chairman of the Board Mats Larsson.

June is the time when hockey clubs lay the groundwork for the next pre-season and also a period when the annual meeting is held and financial statements are presented.

So do the Malmö Redhawks.

The club makes a huge negative result of SEK 19.9 million, which is unusual for an SHL club because the league’s contribution is very large these days.

lost audience

Mats Larsson explains the result in an interview on the Redhawk website:

– We’ve increased travel costs, and they’ve been significant. We have many representative teams that travel a lot. We also lost revenue, but we expected that. Some of our major sponsors have pulled out after worrying about the global situation.

– We also lost marginalized spectators who go three or four times a year. We haven’t lost our loyal fans, explains the score.

Individuals borrowed it

Malmö received signals during the season about the strong negative result and put in place an action plan early on.

– We held a special meeting about the situation and implemented a new share issue. Mats Larsson says he made just under seven million kroner and adds:

– We also came up with a similar solution as in 2017 and built a capital fund where companies and individuals borrowed money, at interest. We have borrowed 15 million SEK and thus have secured our own capital and our money with this.

Larsson claims that Malmö’s financial statements have been approved by the SHL and that the elite license is not in jeopardy.
