The hockey world is mourning Adam Johnson after a fatal accident during a game last Saturday.

At the same time, Sheffield player Matt Pittgrave has received threats and hate, the Telegraph writes.

The hatred towards Pitgrave is truly disgusting, says one supporter, according to the newspaper.

Nottingham’s Adam Johnson, formerly of Malmo, was hit with a skate in the neck during a match against Sheffield and later died from his injuries.

On Sunday, coaches, teammates and fans gathered outside the team’s stadium in Nottingham to mourn and remember the American. A memorial site filled with flowers and Johnson’s T-shirt was created.

Among the people outside the arena was supporter Tina Taylor.

– It was a one-in-a-million thing that would probably never happen again. It was a terrible accident, she told The Telegraph.

People gathered outside the Nottingham Steelers' home field on Sunday to mourn and remember Adam Johnson.

“It was completely destroyed.”

She goes on to say that she saw Matt Pettgrave, the Sheffield player who beat Johnson in his skate, receiving “horrific messages from heartless trolls”.

– He was completely destroyed, but it was a tragic accident and he is not to blame. She says the terrible trolling must stop.

Hate is directed at Pitgrave on social media, but there are also many expressing their support for the Sheffield player.

– A tragic evening. Our thoughts go out to Adam’s family, friends and colleagues. Nothing can prepare you for something like this. To Steelers supporters, we are doing everything we can to ensure Matt Pitgrave and the rest of the team are taken care of in the best possible way, says Gavin Evans, who works in Sheffield, according to the Daily Mail.

The police are investigating

The Daily Mail wrote that police are investigating the circumstances surrounding Johnson’s death.

A police source told the newspaper that our police officers are at the scene of the accident and our investigations into the circumstances are continuing.

Nottingham assistant coach Kevin Moore was on hand outside the field on Sunday along with several players in the squad. There he thanked the fans for their warmth and support.

-We will recover over time and we will do it together. We are strong and we will make you proud. We appreciate you coming here today to show your support.
