Carlos Sainz did everything he could to help his teammate.
But Max Verstappen was the fastest in goal – and extended the lead in the World Cup.

Verstappen dominated the race for a long time, but when AlphaTauris Yuki Tsunoda missed on lap 49 and the safety car went off the track, Sainz got a second chance to try for victory.
But he did not get past last year’s world champion from Holland.
– We were lucky because we were fast on the straight, says Verstappen after the race.
– The safety car in the end didn’t help us either. It was hard to get away from and he had newer tires than I have. I had to fight hard and do my best. I saw he did, too.

Verstappen held out and continued his World Cup lead after nine of 22 races. Behind the World Cup leader, Sainz came second and Lewis Hamilton was third in his Mercedes.
“They’re too fast for us now, but we’re getting close soon and hopefully we can fight with them,” says Lewis Hamilton.
I wasn’t expecting this, it’s my second podium this year and I’m a bit surprised.
Teammate George Russell finished fourth and Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc moved up from 19th to 5th.
The next competition will be decided in the UK on 3 July.
