So when the referee blew up the World Cup qualifier against Slovakia last fall and showed TV pictures of Nella Fischer crying, many people wondered what had happened.
– I don’t want to say that, of course, but I almost didn’t know if this was the last international player or not, she says and continues:
– I think that’s what happened to me. The picture is complete. The national team has been a big part of my life and football means a lot to me. So something only got to me when the final signal was gone.
Despite this, Nella Fischer has opted to say no to this summer’s European Football Championship.
It’s stupid to say it was an easy decision in the end because it wasn’t. It’s always hard to miss a championship opportunity, but I still came to the conclusion that this is how I have fun when they win the gold this summer.
Fisher, who also turned down the Olympics when Ms Mika was expecting the couple’s second child, says there are two main reasons behind the decision to stay home this summer.
– I only have one day with both kids at home but it’s not easy. It’s not a day to heal, and then for my character’s sake, I’ll be without them for three to five weeks, and then I also lay that responsibility on Mika. Doesn’t feel right.
How will it be following another tournament on TV?
– It’ll be fun but I also realize it’s going to be hard to check. I think it will again have such a feeling of unreality at first, it depends a bit on how far they go. If we made it to the final and had the chance to take the gold, I know I’d be very happy and proud that we took it, she said before admitting:
– But I also know that I am nothing more than a human being so I will feel it in the depths of my soul. I do not know what it will be. If sad or like-minded, not to allow participation and win the gold medal with the national team. But that is the case.
The 37-year-old midfielder believes national team captain Peter Gerhardsson and assistant coach Magnus Wakeman have been very responsive in dialogue. Something that also made it easier.
– Yes sure. I did it. This isn’t the first time we’ve had a conversation about whether or not to participate. I don’t think you have to have kids to understand that, but he was well aware that there is something other than football, Fisher says.
Union captain Peter Gerhardsson often refers to himself that each squad that is taken out is only for matches that apply to that specific group. He does not look further than that.
– I think they see the person in a different way than I’ve experienced before. It is of course important to perform on the field, but it is really accepted that if something is with training or family, come a day later or maybe not come to that camp at all. Fisher talks about more than just football.
So Fischer hopes that her lack of thanks for this summer’s European Championships doesn’t mean her career with the national team is over.
And after the experience against Slovakia in Malmö, the 37-year-old feels she wants to know that this is the last time she puts on the shirt before she pulls it over her head.
The perfect ending, of course, was to win a gold medal at a tournament. But I definitely want to plan it somehow. I don’t know why I want it, but in my head it’s almost easier to know before an international or camp that this is the last thing than to go home, and by the way now it won’t be any more, she says. He adds:
– But I also have to be good enough to be chosen.
The contract with Linköping extends this season. Fisher has not yet considered whether there will be a sequel.
– Really, I think it’s only one week at a time. This year, new resolutions will be made this fall. But now I have this year. This is what I focus on. There are a lot of things I have to meet, and I’m not intentional.
