Half of the six goals in the match between Toronto and Washington in the NHL ice hockey game on Sunday night were scored by the Swedes. Niklas Backström scored Washington’s only goal and William Nylander and Pierre Engvall contributed a goal each for Toronto.
The match between Toronto and Washington ended in a clear 5-1 win for Toronto. But it was Washington who took the lead in the first half after 17 minutes through Swedish Niklas Backstrom, assisted by Marcus Johansson. Backstrom scored his first goal in regular time of the season in his ninth game.
But in the second period, Toronto took over completely. It started with Michael Ponting tied it 1-1 after just 1.29 in the period. During this period, Toronto scored three more goals. Morgan Rielly scored first after seven minutes. In the 11th minute, an all-Swedish goal came from William Nylander, assisted by Kalle Jarnkreuk and Rasmus Sandin.
The Swedish position seemed to inspire compatriot Pierre Engvall, who scored Toronto’s fourth and final goal of the period after just over 14 minutes of play.
Washington was unable to restore Toronto’s lead in the third period, which ended with Swede Pontus Holmberg thanks to an assist as Zach Aston Reese scored Toronto’s final goal at 16:47 into the third period.
