At the age of 71, the famous ice hockey player can no longer speak and must be helped to eat.

The ALS Foundation set up by Börje Salming aims to contribute to research and provide support to relatives.

Niklas Liedstrom agreed to lead the foundation that had been started by friends and family of Borgy Salming.

“eye contact”

In August, the 52-year-old former star learned from the family what had happened to Bureh Salming.

It was emotionally difficult to receive bad news. My first thought was that I was sad. Then I tried to connect. I communicated via SMS, but only got a few hearts, and then I realized that things weren’t quite right with him, says Niklas Liedstrom.

More recently, Niklas Liedstrom met Pore Salming more often than before, but the communication has become different.

He does not speak, but makes eye contact and can write, says Niklas Liedstrom.

– You need help, for example, to get a glass of water or brush your teeth. But you have to be there and have it on hand, says Caroline Inger.

Tournaments Round 21 . are folded

SHL, Hockeyallsvenskan and SDHL together with the Foundation decided to dedicate Round 21 during the league match to support Börje Salming and all other people with ALS each year.

The number 21 is a symbolic number for his jersey number and the tournaments will raise funds through various activities.

“Together we look to draw attention to the research need for ALS and to draw attention to the individual whose efforts in Swedish ice hockey are unparalleled,” says Jenny Silverstrand, CEO of SHL.

“If you want to talk about individuals who have meant a lot to Swedish ice hockey, Börje Salming is one of the first, so it’s only natural for us to support someone who has done so much for the sport we all love,” says SDHL Commercial Director Angelica Lindberg.

The family, including Börje himself, his wife Bea and daughter Theresa, are involved in the foundation and union initiatives.

On August 10, Borgy Salming announced that he had suffered from a serious muscle disease.
