New York. Oscar Lindblum became a local folk hero in Philadelphia for his valiant battle against cancer that afflicted him nearly three years ago.
But the sport is exceptionally unemotional at times.
Now the Philadelphia Flyers are buying the Guest Kingdom contract to get more payroll space.
In December 2019, the hockey world was shaken by the news that the then 23-year-old was Philadelphia Flyersthe star Oscar Lindblum He suffered from a rare form of skeletal cancer and had to put his career on hold for the time being.
During the long and difficult treatment that followed, fans in Philadelphia abruptly shut down to show their support, and when he did return in the late summer of 2020, happiness knew no bounds.
But NHL hockey is a business, and today the Pennsylvania club, in dire need of salary cap space, had to make a really difficult decision.
Oscar has been put on so-called waivers – so he can buy his contract before the free agency opens on Wednesday.
Donate 1 million kroner
This means the other 31 clubs in the league have 24 hours to take over the now 25-year-old guest kingdom contract, but it is normal for the contract to be bought and the player becomes an “unrestricted free agent”.
Then he can sign a whole new contract with whomever he wants – even Swedish clubs and main club Brynäs could be a replacement for Oscar.
In connection with Monday’s announcement, Flyers also announced that it will donate $100,000 – just over a million kronor – in Oscar’s name to a local organization that supports families with cancer.
“Thank you for everything, Oscar. You have been an inspiration to our club and our city. We wish you all the best for the next chapter,” read the club’s official Twitter account.
