Aston Villa scored three points at home against Everton after winning 2-1.
Less surprisingly, star midfielder Philippe Coutinho was injured early in the second half.
It was Frank Lampard who celebrated first in the encounter against old midfield opponent Steven Gerrard. But Everton striker Anthony Gordon was offside and did not count his goal.
Instead, it was Aston Villa striker Danny Ings who made it 1-0. Well played by Ole Watkins, the veteran rotated it and crushed the lead behind Jordan Pickford.
In the run-up to the second half, Gerrard was able to see the star midfield Philip Coutinho Limping off the field with suspected muscle injury.
The Aston Villa coach reacted by referring the Argentine player, Emi Buendia, which will bring results. After initially seeing a ball saved on the goal line, he was extending the home team’s lead.
After neglect in midfield by Amadou Onana, a newcomer to Everton, Buendia managed to defend himself in style with Watkins to make it 2-0 at the empty net.
Just a minute later, Onana got some personal revenge when he slashed forward and saw a cross pass into the net after Aston Villa’s Lucas Digne netted an own goal.
This created some drama towards the end and Gordon had two big chances to tie in injury time, but Emiliano Martinez stood in the way of Villa’s goal and saved his side with three valuable points.
The win meant Aston Villa climbed to ninth in the table, while Everton found themselves in 16th. Aston Villa faces Crystal Palace next Saturday and Everton visits Nottingham on the same day.
