Qatar is out of the World Cup finals.
The host country scored its first goal in the tournament, but lost to Senegal 1-3 after a huge mistake by Boualem Khoukhi.
No host country has lost its opening match and no host country has lost two group stage matches.
Qatar also avoided becoming the first host nation to go 0-0 in their first two matches – but it was Senegal who secured a comfortable win at Al Thumama Stadium.
A foul from the center back
The first goal of the match came five minutes before the end of the first half, when it was assisted by Boualem Khoukhi. Qatar’s center back was about to step in the penalty area, but stumbled the ball and didn’t have time to react before Boulay Dia crushed Senegal’s lead.
Famara Didio lunged forward and headed in Senegal’s second goal and it was also a header that would break Qatar’s World Cup clean sheet.
Mohamed Muntari scored Qatar’s first ever goal in a World Cup play-off in the 78th minute, but the hosts went down.
Bamba Deng responded with the final score 1-3.
Qatar can leave the World Cup finals on Friday
Qatar’s chances of qualifying for the last 16 are now very slim.
Ecuador should beat both the Netherlands and Senegal while Qatar should beat the Netherlands. In addition, in such a result, Qatar should have a better goal difference than both Senegal and the Netherlands.
Already tonight (Friday), the fate of Qatar can be decided, if the Netherlands scores a goal against Ecuador.
