The derby had gone viral before the game after Atletico Madrid supporters hung an effigy of Real Madrid’s Vinicius Junior from a bridge in Madrid.
Vinicius and Real Madrid got revenge when they defeated Atletico Madrid in the quarter-finals of the Spanish Cup 3-1 after extra time.
Visitors took the lead
Atletico Madrid got their best start in the 19th minute. Correa, Cook and Molina all packed the Real Madrid defense – before Morata was shut out and made it an easy 1-0.
For a long time it looked like it was going to be the only goal in the game. Real Madrid came up with some good scoring chances – but the calm in the closing stages was lacking. Substitute Rodrygo then moved forward. The 22-year-old needed just ten minutes before hitting a beautiful single digit shot to make it 1-1 in the second half.
I decided to work overtime
The score was 1-1 and the match had to be decided in overtime. There, visiting Stefan Savic drew two quick yellow cards.
With another player on the field, Karim Benzema, 35, charged forward and decided – with a well-placed finish to make it 2-1 for the hosts. Vinicius Jr. of course ended up on the score sheet as he put the final score at 3-1.
– It was a difficult match, against a strong opponent, but with the character of this team, we managed to turn the match around, says Karim Benzema.
Real Madrid join Barcelona, Osasuna and Athletic Club in the semi-finals – which takes place on Monday.
