Sainz is sad, Hamilton is on the podium, Alonso is angry

Carlos Sainz was on his way to second under Formula 1 Austria 2022. But he broke after the car started burning.
Ferrari drivers broke more than a third of the season’s races.
– It’s heartbreaking, he says.

Ferrari has had a number of mechanical failures this season, and Carlos Sainz, who last won in the UK, is now in the works since his car started burning – when he was on the verge of finishing second and a double-win for the team.
Reliability is critical for an entire season and a miscalculation this weekend can have serious consequences. On the one hand, Charles Leclerc could not get as many points in the World Cup battle as he had hoped, and on the other hand, Sainz lost himself in the tournament.

He jumped out of the burning car

Sainz has now broken four out of eleven races, and when Ferrari decides which driver to bet on, the team’s driver won’t be the worst at the World Cup.
– It was a very strange situation. I saw how the officials came to stop the car, but I also saw the fire in the rearview mirror and was surprised that no one came to help me any faster, Carlos Sainz tells Sky.

– In the end, I had to jump out of the car, even though it was moving. It’s anything but optimal and we have to find a solution for that in the future.

He also acknowledges that Ferrari has a reliability issue:
– It’s not perfect and we have to look closely at the problems. This time it cost us many important points. When I have a fast car that breaks down, I prefer to have a slower car that does not break down.

– As a team we were having a great comeback, but then one of the cars suddenly broke down and without warning. It’s heartbreaking.
In the World Cup summary, Max Verstappen now has a 38-point lead over Charles Leclerc, but Ferrari also missed the opportunity to curtail Red Bull’s lead in the economically important constructors’ championship.

Tough day for Verstappen in F1 in Austria 2022

Max Verstappen was hoping for another home victory at the Red Bull Ring. He won the race and started first – but had no chance against Ferrari. Charles Leclerc has outdone him on three occasions.
– It was a very difficult day. It seemed like we had big problems with the tires, no matter what rubber compound we used, we had problems. The tire wear was pretty great, but considering how tough this day was, second place is really good.
He got the fastest lap and only lost six points to Leclerc in the summary. At the moment Max Verstappen leads the World Cup with 38 points ahead of Charles Leclerc, and there are two races left before the summer break, the French Grand Prix in two weeks and the competition in Hungary last July.

Mercedes led Lewis Hamilton third and George Russell fourth. When neither Ferrari nor Red Bull took two cars to the finish line, Mercedes did a really good race again and after both Russell and Hamilton crashed in Friday’s qualifying, not many expected two silver arrows among the top four.
“I wasn’t expecting this, these are great points,” says Hamilton, who has now run three or three races in a row.
The stable didn’t have high hopes of competing in Austria but focused on the French Grand Prix in a couple of weeks – so the weekend was really on point with the added advantage.

The best of the season F1 Austria 2022

Mick Schumacher got his first points in the UK last weekend. In Austria, he drove sixth, the best result of his career. Incidentally, Leclerc’s victory in Austria was Ferrari’s first since 2003, when Mick’s father Michael Schumacher won the Ferrari competition.
“I’m very happy with what we’ve done as a team as we get closer to the top 10,” says Mick Schumacher.
And this time, he and teammate Kevin Magnussen were both in the top ten with both Haas cars.

Fernando Alonso waved his finger at Yuki Tsunoda – while driving 200 jolts. He was not at all happy with the Japanese leadership and Red Bull had problems with the 22-year-old’s temperament. Helmut Marko even called him a problem child and took action. You can read more about it here.

Again a good race, but we’ll talk more about that in the F1 podcast, Plattan i Mattan, which comes out on Wednesday.

I take this with me from the weekend:
