Serie A club Salernitana dismisses its coach – for the second time in a month

On January 8, Davide Nicola was fired from the coaching position at Salernitana.

Two days later he returned to the club.

Now, not even a month later, he’s been kicked out again.

Salernitana, after a good start to the season, fell like a stone in the Italian league table. In the last nine rounds, they managed only four points and were placed after 22 rounds in 16th place, four points clear of the relegation zone.

The recent failed results prompted the club’s management to act on more than one occasion.

On 8 January, coach David Nicola was sacked, but only two days later he was reinstated after speaking with the club’s chairman, Danilo Lervolino, concluding that it was a mistake to let Nicola go.

Now, just under a month later, the 49-year-old is clearly set to be fired again. Nicola, who last season managed to keep Salernitana in Serie A after a strong recovery in the last rounds, must leave the same job for the second time in less than a month.

“Through thanks for the passion and commitment shown by the club, the club wishes him all the best in continuing his professional career,” the club wrote on their website.

He will be replaced by former Fiorentina coach and captain of the Polish national team, Paulo Sousa. The 52-year-old recently came from Brazil, where he coached Flamengo.

Salernitana’s next game will be played on Sunday when it faces Lazio in Rome.
