I had chills.
Sweden beat Hungary after 16 (!) penalties – and now the quarter-finals are guaranteed.
Tomorrow is a crucial match in the group stage to determine the first place against the Czech Republic.
Sweden faced Hungary in the penultimate group stage match of the Hockey World Cup.
Even five minutes before play, Sweden could have taken the lead. Mira Jungåker sprinted forward with the puck before hitting the near post.
– She has a lot of self-confidence. Well done Jungåker. But I think it’s a fancy goalkeeper board, says SVT Team Expert Maria Roth.
Three vs Five game
Later in the period, Sweden had to play three against five, after Jenny Antonson and Tia Johansson were sent off.
Despite the advantage, Hungary did not manage to get a hole in Sweden at that time. But a tie will come after all before the period break.
After another game for Hungary, Emma Krish managed to score 1–1.
In the second period, Sweden managed to regain the lead in the match by way of Linea Johansson.
Carlson was fired: ‘Unnecessary’
A little later, it was time for the Olivia Carlsons show. The 27-year-old entered with a tackle at the back of Hungary’s Taylor Becker, and Sweden subsequently received a five-minute expulsion.
– It’s unnecessary. It’s not a puck, so to me it’s very likely an extra game. It’s wrong thinking, says Maria Roth, go tweak instead.
However, Hungary fair again. In the third inning, Francesca Kiss Simon scored 2-2 from close range.
There were no false goals in either regular or extra time and the match was decided by penalties.
– There were a lot of wrong decisions. On top of that, there are many expulsions. They put themselves in bullshit, says Ruth.
After 15 (!) consecutive penalties from both teams, Sweden managed to make the decision through Hana Olsson.
The group stage will be decided tomorrow when Sweden meets the Czech Republic. The Swedish team must win to grab first place.
