New York. William Nylander and the other Blue and White Leafs from Toronto continue to torment the Tampa Bay Lightning.
Last night, they trailed 3-1 going into the third period – and with just 55 seconds of extra time, John Tavares decided after a brilliant display from ‘Lil-Nilette’.
– We do not feel sorry for ourselves, but we continue to play no matter what happens, says the hero of the match.
After several tainted playoff encounters in recent years, Tampa and Toronto have developed a somewhat eroded rivalry — and at the moment, the latter is master of the road.
They won a dramatic first-round series last spring, and in the first meeting since then, in Tampa last night, they poured fresh salt on still-healing wounds.
Twelve minutes into the third period, the former champions took a 3-1 lead, but in just over two minutes, rookie Matthew Kniss equalized the first two goals of his NHL career.
– It was an absolutely incredible feeling. Great, the 21-year-old smiles afterwards.
However, that was just the beginning.
With 55 seconds remaining in overtime, the visiting Canadian team also delivered the final blow.
John Klingberg passed the puck to William Nylander, who was able to pass it to John Tavares next to Jonas Johansson in the penalty area.
– It was a really beautiful performance, notes the hero of the match.
– But I am happy above all that we never gave up in third place. We don’t feel sorry for ourselves but we keep playing no matter what.
In the Tampa camp, the joy is more limited. Not to say completely absent.
– I feel frustrated and disappointed with the performance we presented in the third period. We’re much better than this, Motors coach John Cooper.
– But all credit to the Maple Leafs. They did what they had to do to win, and we didn’t.
Lil-Nellet also scored a beautiful goal in the first half, collecting nine points in five matches (4+5) – which means that this start to the season is the best in his career so far.
Victor Hedman provided the assist for the home team.
