Toronto is raising money in honor of Bower Salming

The NHL Toronto Maple Leafs are raising money for ALS Canada in honor of the recently deceased Börje Salming.

During their next home game — Thursday night against San Jose — for example, all proceeds from Toronto jersey sales go to ALS Action Canada. The club states that the badge that the players wore on their shirts to honor Salming after news of his death will be available in the future for purchase and the proceeds will then go to the organisation.

Ice hockey legend Berry Salming passed away last week from the effects of ALS nerve disease. He was 71 years old.

Just two weeks ago, he was honored at Toronto’s home circuit.

Salming played 16 seasons in Toronto, and still holds several club records — best goalkeeper and most assists, among others — and has his jersey number on the roof and a statue outside.

“Borgy Salming’s death reminds us all that it is time to raise our voices and come together as a country to end this terrible and painful disease right now,” Mark Kirton of ALS Action Canada said in a statement.

ALS Action Canada is a patient-led, nonprofit organization that works to, among other things, ensure that ALS patients have faster access to new treatment methods.
