Yemane Haileselassie walks away from the IAAF World Championships in Eugene

Four Eritrean athletes lost track and field after the toilet in Eugene.

One of them is star Yemane Haile Selassie who finished seventh in the 3000m hurdles final.

The World Athletics Cup is over and two days after the tournament, information is now received from the United States that five people from the Eritrean national team are missing.

Fox 12 Oregon TV said about four track and field athletes and one other person should have been reported missing to police on Sunday.

The missing are Haptom Keleta, 18, Marhawi Tweldeberhan, 18, Andy Philimon, 24, Yamani Haile Selassie, 24, and Berhe Negus, 44.

Yemane Haileselassie finished seventh in the 3000m hurdles and is now missing out.

Fifth in the Olympics

The biggest name in the crowd is Yemane Haileselassie who finished seventh in the 3000m hurdles final.

He holds the national distance record and has competed in both the 2016 and 2021 Olympics. At the recent Olympics, Haileselassie placed fifth in the 3000m hurdles.

According to Fox 12, the circumstances surrounding the situation remain unclear, but the FBI and Oregon State Police are aware of the athletes’ disappearance.

Previous Disappearances

Even in the past, Eritrean athletes disappeared due to tournaments in various sports.

One of them is Weynay Ghebresilasie, who also runs the 3,000m hurdles and competed in the Olympics in 2012. He settled in England and said the trip was due to a human rights shortage in Eritrea.

According to Human Rights Watch, the Eritrean regime is one of the most repressive in the world. It subject its residents to widespread forced labor and conscription and limits freedom of expression and freedom of religion.
