Young Crowns won the group – beating the Czech Republic

The U18 National Team continues to win matches in the WC.

Against the Czech Republic, Sweden had their third successive win, but it was hard to come by.

Victory would mean Sweden won the group – with one match remaining.

An opening smash against Canada and then a slightly more cramp win over Slovakia. The Young Crowns had started the FIFA U-18 World Cup with pot ahead of their third group stage match against the Czech Republic.

And the winning streak will extend even further – after so much back and forth.

No goals after two periods

And although Sweden dominated the game and went 21-9 on shots after two periods, they still couldn’t get a hole in Czech Republic goaltender Michael Hrabal.

Barely eight minutes into the third period, Tom Wilander gave Sweden the lead in a five-on-three match. Then the Czech Republic tried to equalize, but failed to equalise. The Pennies then won 2-0 after another empty-net goal by Otto Stenberg.

The group wins

With this victory, Sweden finished first in the group, where head-to-head matches take precedence over goal difference, and the only ones who can reach nine points are Canada. In the final group stage match, they face Germany, who on paper are the worst team in the group. The team lost all matches and only managed to score one goal in three matches.

The Young Crowns must now face Group D in Group B in the quarter-finals, which likely means Norway or Latvia.

The last group stage match will be played on Tuesday.
